Skim coating in floor preparation is a process in which a compound is applied to the subfloor as an underlayment to reduce variations in the floor and provide for a smooth and adherable surface over which new floor coverings can be installed.

Snap the chalk line over the top of the concrete or moisture barrier between the marks on opposite walls making a cross.

Use a pry bar and hammer to remove baseboards to create an expansion gap a space that allows the new flooring to expand from heat and moisture.

Establish installation guidelines measure and mark the center of all four walls at floor level.
If your subfloor is concrete cover it with a wood or engineered wood subfloor first.
